It can be a lengthy, time consuming process, so when you receive a grant, its like you have won a golden ticket!

We recently received a grant from the Brain Injury Alliance along with the Province of BC for Critical Funding. In production as you read! Filming is underway, in case you hadn't heard, we partnered up with Carihi Media students and have created a film about an eccentric group of individuals, all with Brain Injuries, who are mandated to attend a support group for it. The students, who completely wrote and produced this for us, have created a light hearted comedy that is thought provoking and will be sure to bring awareness and a new light for some to the subject of Brain Injury.

We like to be busy, so we have another project on the go. We are working hard to secure a second set of apartments for our clients. Our waitlist for our housing program is very lengthy and we are finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel!  Our housing program has been very successful, and we have already had turn around, where clients have moved forward and are achieving the goals they set out for themselves! We are so excited for what the future may bring!

"Making Headway"

What happens when the Campbell River Head lnjury Society receives a grant to produce a

film, enlists the Carihi Secondary Media class and tells them to make it about head injury?

Together, they make "Headway".

"When Jennifer Parker and Shelley Howard approached us back in May I thought they would

want a short documentary or promotional video. I didn't expect Shelley to ask us to make the

film focus on comedy" says Carihi Media teacher Joe Shields. Over May and June, Shields

and his student Amy McCabe, Jordyn Lagos, and Cavin Stewardson wrote "Headway"

Headway is a movie about six eccentrics in a head injury support group. We have a workholic,

a construction worker, a not so old guy, a closeted singer, a cat lover and a therapist that

loves life just a little too much. The film shows how these eccentrics grow closer as they deal

with the consequences of their injuries and it does so in a light-hearted way. The film will run

around 25 minutes and the cast has roles for both youth and adults.

"Headway" is an amazing learning experience for my students, says joe. lt's not often that

students get the chance to bring a project through all stages of development and work with a

budget. Through making headway they will learn about the impact head injury can have on

families; further, once they have experienced headway they know how to find financing,

complete writing, find locations, find casts and directors and be aware of how to deal with the

challenges of real world independent filmmaking

We will be holding auditions at the River City Playhouse on Friday Oct.24th from G:30-8:30pm

and on Saturday Oct.26 from 2-4pm.

One of the sessions was by Dr Topolovec-Vranic and it was regarding her recent research into the correlation between brain injury and homelessness.




With shocking numbers such as  almost 50% of homeless men participating in the research reporting a significant Brain Injury, 87% of these were prior to becoming homeless.

This week we received a second letter and cheque from a local youth who had done some fundraising and was donating a portion of it to a local charity.




We were so touched to be the recipients of such a generous soul, Thank you student for making your community a better place to live in!

We have officially finished the Handyman Challenge, with Shaw " Don't Poke the Shawmen" winning the Gold Hammer, " Royal Shed Heads" winning the Silver and "Ouch I hit my thumb" Taking home the very special Rusty hammer, second year going!




Thank you so much to all our volunteers that come down and build these amazing structures, without you we wouldn't be able to hold this fantastic fundraiser!




We are well on our way with selling of the raffle tickets as well, keep your eye out for us in July and August, we will be all over town with them! $10.00 gets you a ticket with your choice of Shed, Greenhouse or Playhouse to win.




We who work at the Head Injury got a bit of an education this past month. We attended the Pushor Mitchell Okanagan Conference on Brain Injury in Kelowna. With a fantastic line of speakers, we filled our brains with as much information on brain injury as we could. We also attended a conference there with Dr Dr. Jane Topolvec-Vranic on the correlation between Brain Injury and Homelessness. Very insightful!

This year we are hosting a raffle for our Sheds. We have the tickets oriented and ready to go!

The cost is $10.00 a ticket and on each ticket you get your choice of one of the following, a Playhouse, a green House or a Shed, pictures below.

The ticket draw date is September 8th, so you have the whole summer to amass a collection of them and raise your chances of winning!

There is also other structures on our property, which will be for sale, so drop in and have a look around!

We held the build at our building this year and it went fantastically! We built 3 structures over the weekend; 

A beautiful 2 story playhouse, complete with twirly slide, secret antrance, sand box and a small storage space underneath for mom and dad!

The sheds are an ongoing project, and all are to be finished by June 28th. We will post photos on their progress!

There was also one last team that was unable to make the Handyman kick off weekend, but will be here this coming weekend, and over the next month building us a very exciting project!
