We have been building and expanding our Housing Program since it began in 2011. We started when we purchased our original building and had 4 suites available to rent. We offered short term, transitional housing, to assist clients in the transition to market rental housing. In running this program we spotted another gap in the market, some of our clients needed a safe, affordable place but did not need the one on one support provided in our Transitional Housing program. So we sought out funding and secured our second set of Housing, Tyee Apartments. In these we are able to offer safe, affordable housing to our clients as well as market renters. However the apartments that we purchased were already built and thus had tenants living in them, so we are only able to offer housing as someone moves out, and as our wait list is rapidly growing we needed another solution. We then set out to find the funding to not only build more safe housing, but to also have a space that we could offer out to other medical services that MANY don't have access to on the North Island. Many of our clients have to travel to Victoria or even Vancouver to access a lot of the needed services that come along with a Brain injury, however funding for these trips is far and few between, so we decided to incorporate it into our new Housing. We will have rooms available to Specialists, some whom have already expressed great interest at taking part!
We purchased the lot as of November 2017, and we couldn't be more exited about it! Building has started as of May 2019! Linda's Place was completed and opened in May of 2020!
